John is a visual artist from Moosonee Ontario who has had an international career spanning over decades. His work, which is categorized as realism, reflects the connectedness that he has always had with the land of his Cree ancestors. Through his art, John respectfully and lovingly observes his surroundings, the changing of the seasons, and the landscape of Mushkegowuk Territory.
With meticulous attention to detail, his works depict the Cree people and the wildlife who have lived together for thousands of years. He also excels in still life representations painting, among other items, canoes, snowshoes and moccasins, objects important in Cree culture and the everyday lives of the people of his homeland.
Our mission is to foster connection, opportunity, and knowledge-sharing for those who create (Oshichikesiwuk). In doing so, we empower the voices of Mushkegowuk Cree to express the sacred connection between our people, water, land, and all our relations.
We envision a future where the voices of Omushkegowuk creators (Oshichikesiwuk) are empowered and valued, ensuring a legacy of harmony between culture and sustainability that resonates through generations connected to the James Bay Coast (Nanipek).
