With much cedar along the river shores to practice carving my dad and older brother were very skilled in the craft.
Later in life and taking pride in the atmosphere of carving I was brought up in, I took upon myself the honour the art form that my father had shown me.
The natural materials upon which my art takes form always reminded me of my upbringing on the land and how it has taken care of us. Our connection to the land remains just as important to me today as it did then, and I am grateful for the peace it provides.
From harvesting the wood, to prayer, to design, and formation, the process of carving brings fulfillment and connection to our traditional way of life. I look to share this experience with as many of our people as I can while continuing on with the teachings my father has blessed me with.
Through carving my love and respect of the land takes on a physical form that I am very happy to share with family and friends.
Our mission is to foster connection, opportunity, and knowledge-sharing for those who create (Oshichikesiwuk). In doing so, we empower the voices of Mushkegowuk Cree to express the sacred connection between our people, water, land, and all our relations.
We envision a future where the voices of Omushkegowuk creators (Oshichikesiwuk) are empowered and valued, ensuring a legacy of harmony between culture and sustainability that resonates through generations connected to the James Bay Coast (Nanipek).
