Biography

My name is Helen Joan Kattaquapit. I am from Attawapiskat First Nation. I come from a family of 10 children. I also have 4 sons and 3 grandchildren.
Growing up, my parents took us out to the land and taught us about survival. They taught us that the land is our life and our connection to our creator.
From the beaver trim to the hide preparation each step in making our clothing offers many teachings and opportunities to learn. From harvesting the moose to smoking the hide, the process of creating our clothing is one that requires an entire family to take part in.

Being an artisan helps me be a part of all the artisans who are the voices for mother earth and all its inhabitants through our art as we see it. I enjoy teaching my grandchildren about our ancestors, dances, and hand drum singing.

We must continue to embrace not only the warmth of our traditional clothing but the process that requires us to work together in creating it.

As a jingle dress dancer and avid traditional artisan I take pride in honouring our traditional ceremonies that provide strength and healing to our communities.
