WABIMEGUIL

(Betty Albert)

Betty (Wabimeguil) is from Fox Lake Reserve located in what is now Northern Ontario Canada. Her artwork has a special connection to the land and culture of James Bay Cree. Both have served as a backdrop against which she has spent over 30 years evolving and developing her own distinct style of Indigenous Artwork.

While she has had success throughout North America and beyond, her artwork has been well-received by her people, the James Bay Cree. She often tells the story that if her art is beautiful, it is only because she has spent her life trying to capture and reflect the beauty of the James Bay Cree people, the beauty of their culture, and the beauty of the land.

Betty’s artist name, Wabimeguil, means “White Feather” in the dialect of Cree spoken by the indigenous people of Western James Bay. A full-time artist since 1992, Betty’s preferred medium is acrylic on canvas and is inspired by northern landscapes at dawn and dusk.
