My name is Ashley Kioke. I am a self taught beader, my paternal grandmother and great grandmother were artisans. They created mittens, clothing, hats adorned with beautiful beadwork when they were able to work with their hands, it unfortunately slowed down as they got older but that didn’t stop my grandmother in making moosehide gloves for my son, her jaban (great grandson). Her artwork will be my greatest treasures. I picked up the art of beading back in 2019 as a form of self-healing, and a way to feel connected to my grandmother after her passing. Since then I have taught myself to make skirts, and gloves. I plan to learn all that I can so that I can give this knowledge to my future generations.
Our mission is to foster connection, opportunity, and knowledge-sharing for those who create (Oshichikesiwuk). In doing so, we empower the voices of Mushkegowuk Cree to express the sacred connection between our people, water, land, and all our relations.
We envision a future where the voices of Omushkegowuk creators (Oshichikesiwuk) are empowered and valued, ensuring a legacy of harmony between culture and sustainability that resonates through generations connected to the James Bay Coast (Nanipek).
